Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels down to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," he added. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
